Latest Updated Petrol Price In Pakistan

Pakistan is going through dark and gloomy times. The economy is trembling, and people are looking for a ray of hope. But sadly, we can barely see one. One of the major issues for most people is the rising petrol price in Pakistan. When petrol prices fluctuate, the whole transportation sector gets affected, leading the country towards inflation.

There have been two major hikes in the rates, which have taken the current petrol price in Pakistan to Rs 209.86 per liter. We have witnessed an unprecedented rise of Rs 60 in one week. People are not ready to accept the prices, and we saw different protests in the country as well, but it all went in vain. It is the first time that the 1-liter petrol price in Pakistan has crossed the 200 mark. However, the government was bound to take these tough decisions and RedBox Real estate has compiled research on the latest petrol prices in Pakistan. Let's dive into the detail.

    Petrol, Government and IMF

The government had crocodile tears in its eyes while announcing the increase in petrol prices on Thursday, June 2nd. They claimed that their hands are tied as they have to crack the deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The government increased the petrol price in Pakistan so it can re-start the IMF program and get $900 million approved, which is very crucial to bailout Pakistan’s troubling economy.

    Petrol Price in Pakistan Today

As of June 6th, 2022; the latest petrol price in Pakistan is as follows.

    • Petrol — Rs209.86
    • Diesel — Rs204.15
    • Light diesel — 178.31
    • Kerosene oil — Rs181.94

New Petrol Price in Pakistan and Subsidies

Pakistan is a country where people are always on a budget. The purchasing power of the masses is quite low here. Therefore, the government sells petroleum products at subsidised rates. It means the public gets a waiver from the government on the actual rates.

Before the hike, the government was providing people with a subsidy of Rs86 per liter, as per the finance minister. However, Rs. 60 from it has been withdrawn during recent hikes.

    Future of Petrol Prices

Every Pakistani is worried about the future of petrol prices in Pakistan. It plays a vital role in the budgeting of every single home in the country. People have to commute on a daily basis. But the fluctuating prices in Pakistan are keeping them on edge.

It might not make your day, because unfortunately, the news is worse. We will shortly have a new petrol price in Pakistan as another hike is expected sooner or later. With the total withdrawal of subsidies, petrol will cost around Rs235 per liter. The government is bound to stop subsidising petroleum prices in order to get the IMF’s instalment, which is the only way through.

Petrol and Pandemic – A Short History

Back when COVID-19 was at its peak, we saw many unprecedented things. Travelling was banned, people got stuck in their homes, and it seemed like life had come to a pause. In those challenging times, we witnessed the prices of petroleum products falling drastically. The pandemic had a very negative impact on the petroleum industry as demand declined internationally.

Fuel consumption in Pakistan fell by 11% during the fiscal year June-July 2019-2020. It was because of the strict lockdowns that were imposed throughout the country in order to keep people from catching COVID. At the time, we witnessed the lowest petrol price in Pakistan. We can recall that by June 2020, the petrol price was Rs 74.52 per liter.

    The Rise in Petrol Prices

When the world came back to normal with SOPs and corporates started calling their employees back to the offices, the petroleum industry came out of crisis and the prices started to rise. By the end of June 2020, the price of petrol in Pakistan had increased by Rs25.58, making it Rs100.10 per liter.

It was from that point that petrol never looked back. Uncertain economic conditions in the country and increasing demand for petroleum products in the international market became the reasons for the hike in petrol prices. As of June 6, 2022, the latest petrol prices in Pakistan are Rs 209.86. The cherry on top is that the rates are expected to surge in the coming days, so brace yourselves.

Who Regulates the Prices of Petrol in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority is responsible for regulating the prices of petrol as this department looks after the fuel sector in the country. It was founded in 2002 by the government of Pakistan. OGRA makes a comprehensive summary considering the demand, supply, and usage of key resources. The summary informs the government about the current situation in the fuel sector and suggests changes in fuel prices.

The summary is presented to the Premier of Pakistan. It is only implemented after the approval of the premier. Otherwise, it is rejected and the prices remain the same. Negotiations between OGRA and the government also play a very crucial role in the process of finalizing the petrol price in Pakistan.
